Kamarni is an apprentice at Kuehne + Nagel, working in an operational role that plays a key part in keeping vessels and containers moving efficiently through UK ports. His day-to-day responsibilities focus on providing PINs to ensure vessels can be released on time, as well as confirming delivery times for containers so that shipments stay on schedule. In a fast-moving industry where timing is critical, his role helps ensure cargo flows smoothly in and out of the UK.
Kamarni discovered the opportunity through the Kuehne + Nagel job site. After researching the business and learning more about what the company does, he became increasingly interested in the scale of the operation and the opportunities available. The idea of gaining first-hand insight into the freight forwarding industry, and understanding how shipments move internationally, made it an exciting career choice.
What attracted him most to the role was the opportunity to interact with customers and develop a deeper understanding of how goods enter and leave the UK. Being part of a process that connects global supply chains gave him exposure to an industry that impacts everyday life more than most people realise.
The role typically requires GCSEs at Grade 4 and above. However, the company values potential and offers support for colleagues who may need to complete their English or Maths qualifications. Rather than going to university, Kamarni chose to begin his career through an apprenticeship route. Looking ahead, he is considering progressing onto a degree apprenticeship once he completes his current programme, continuing to build both his academic qualifications and practical experience.
Before joining the company, Kamarni worked at Sports Direct, where he developed strong customer service skills. Learning how to deal with different customers and adapt to a range of needs has been highly transferable to logistics, where communication is essential. During school, he also learned the importance of adjusting communication styles depending on the audience – whether speaking to friends, teachers or professionals – a skill that now helps him communicate effectively with colleagues and customers across the supply chain.
The best part of the role for Kamarni has been the team around him. From the beginning, he felt welcomed and supported. His colleagues have taken the time to teach him processes and guide him through challenges, creating a positive work environment that makes him look forward to coming to work each day.
His biggest career highlight so far has been gaining the confidence to manage his responsibilities independently. Being able to handle challenges without needing as much support has shown him how much he has progressed. Developing that independence and learning how to overcome daily operational challenges has been a proud moment in his journey so far.
